Rest in Peace, Tallulah

After four and a half years of litter box accidents, hundreds of dollars worth of vet visits, medicine, prescription cat food and behavior modification, we've officially given up on Tallulah.

There aren't really any adoptive families out there for 10 year old cats who poop on the floor, so on the advice of our veterinarian and our local no-kill animal shelter, we had her put down today.

I feel horribly guilty. My cats were my first "kids," and now I've had one killed for misbehaving. But cats aren't kids. The ethics are different.

I'm sad now. Josh is probably even sadder. But we gave Tallulah a good life. And that's what I'll choose to remember.

As an animal owner, we must constantly balance our needs with those of our pets. It can be downright torturous sometimes to realize that the pet we love and cherish may not be able to stay with us, for whatever reason it may be.

But I am also reminded that we, as humans, have the ultimate gift in compassion for our pets. We can make a decision to end suffering and poor quality of life to spare further hardship for the one we love so much. No matter what the issue, or sickness.

You made the right decision for you, and you have memories of Tallulah that will last a lifetime. These memories were (hopefully) not marred by the end years of resentment towards that pet, when it became too much.

Sending comforting thoughtsyour way, and hoping that you can take some time with your children to properly celebrate her part in your family today.

We've been there. I'm sorry for everyone. You acted responsibly and lovingly. But that doesn't make it any less sad, of course.

Our sympathies...

I'm sure that was a tough choice and I am sorry there wasn't another way out of the dilemma. You gave Tallulah a good home and a lot of love for a very long time and I'm sure you will miss everything about her but the poop on your floor.

We will miss Tallulah on our visits, she was always the friendlier cat but must have been stressed and is now in a happier place.

You did the right thing, Josh and Alma. It's very hard, I know, but keep those good, warm memories of a healthy, happy Tallulah with you.

Thinking of you and wishing you both peace.

I was just thinking about your situation this morning as I was wiping pee from the bathroom floor all around the toilet. Alas, this recurring mess is from my two boys!

I think @mustangsabby said it quite well, so I'll refer you back to her comment.

In addition to having the same bathroom issues with my boys that Kim mentioned, our six month old cat has decided to poop on our heirloom Asian rug. I'm curious about what methods you tried to break Tallulah of the habit. Maybe one of them will work with our Pirate.
