Nothing says "welcome to the neighborhood" like "your house was the scene of a brutal crime," which may explain why it took nearly 6 years for someone to tell me that a mentally unstable man killed his 70 year old mother, hacked her to pieces and lived with her decomposing body parts back in 1976. Apparently it took 4 days before a next door neighbor got suspicious and called the police.
I finally got the story from the youngest daughter of my recently deceased elderly neighbor. She and her husband have been cleaning out the house, which has been in their family since it was built in 1910 (the same year our house was built).
Now that my curiosity has been piqued, I'm going to try to find out more about the crime. One of my neighbors moved across the street just 4 months before the murder and she's promised to sit down and tell me what she knows. I'll post any updates here. And, in case you're wondering, I've never gotten any bad vibes from the house. I've always felt very safe here.

Yikes.
Oh, that would stress me out! Glad you haven't gotten any strange vibes... Out here we have a death disclosure where it is standard procedure to inform any prospective buyers whether anyone died in the house (regardless of method - or just natural causes.)
Chills!
WOW yeah I'm surprised that isn't something that has to be disclosed. And I can't believe no one told you! I've got chills now just knowing it happened less than a mile away from where I'm sitting right now.
Wow, you and Carrie live THAT close? As for the house. It's just a structure, right? That said, I'm with Cindy.
(Oh, and if she's coming to your clothing swap, maybe I can tag along?)
Ew. Ew. Ew. That's all I can say. I guess if you have now found out after you have established a loving relationship with your home, then it isn't as bad as knowing when moving in. My husband and I almost bought a house once that had a creepy room in the basement that had been converted into a bathroom for a convalescent person. There were handicap railings and all sorts of strange creepy things in there. The creep factor was too high and we decided to keep looking.
I've seen your house. It's too cute to be haunted.
The only haunting...
As someone who has overnighted in your basement several times, the only out-of-the-ordinary event I have experienced is the inexplicable activation of the ringing phone and the water sounds in your daughters' play kitchen when no one was pushing the buttons. Since this noise woke me up repeatedly two nights in a row, I turned the toggle switch in the back of the kitchen to OFF and no more sounds awoke me.
