Every day I log onto
Facebook and see more of my friends (or their kids) have come down with swine flu. But early this week I saw the Oak Park Village (I'm a fan) was taking calls for an H1N1 vaccination clinic for high-risk residents. I called right away and got the girls two of the first 15 slots.

Speaking of vaccinations, this month's Wired cover story has a pretty good cover story called
An Epidemic of Fear: How Panicked Parents Skipping Shots Endanger Us All.

I read the Wired story last week and got mad all over again. I am so tired of people making decisions based on fear and "expert" advice which is usually completely self serving.
Glad you guys had such an easy experience.
I have a draft post on making decisions out of fear.....
Franny, want to collaborate?
But am I hypocrite if I probably wont get my kids the vax?
I read the article as well and maybe I missed it but I could not understand the headline and the inference that if some parents don't get their kids vaccinated that others will suffer? Aren't all the kids that get vaccinated "covered"? So the only kids hypothetically to suffer are the kids whose parents made a choice to not vaccinate. Seems to me that this is an issue that is up to parents and that parents should not be judged either way? Just my two cents.
@Matt Cote Herd immunity is at risk when there is a tipping point of non-vaccinators. They put at risk those who CAN'T be immunized (newborns, the sick) and those for whom a vaccine fails to "take."
From the article: "The study found that the risk of contracting [measles] was lower if you were completely unvaccinated and living in a highly vaccinated community than if you were completely vaccinated and living a a relatively unvaccinated community. Why? Because vaccines don't always take. What does that mean? You can't minimize your individual risk unless your herb, your friends and neighbors, also buy in."
People get kids vaccinated out of fear (and as a result of media fear-mondering) too! We do lots of things out of fear. I read the Wired article, I keep an open mind, I also read this:

lots of viewpoints out there, keep talking, but please, no judging.
@Christina
While I respect parents who opt out of flu vaccinations for personal reasons, I take issue with your posting a link to Dr. Mercola's site. Dr. Mercola has been ordered by the FDA to stop making illegal claims about his supplements at least twice. His advice is at odds with those of leading medical and public health organization.
Just because it's on the internet doesn't mean it's true.
