On the cusp of reading

Z, who turned 4 in November, is showing more and more signs of reading readiness. She can sound out a lot of words and yesterday she wrote MGAZEN and said "Look mommy, I spelled magazine. I just sounded out the letters!" Before MGAZEN, all the words Z's written have been memorized, and most of them are the names of her family members or friends.

Check out this Slate article on how you can help your infant, toddler or elementary school child build his or her reading skills.

Julian is totally reading and his skills catapulted forward over the holidays. It's really fun.

He also had a spelling incident where he called out from the bathroom, "Can someone come wipe my B-U-T?!"

I LOVE "inventive spelling." Nutmeg likes to make signs to tape up around the house, and I'd love to save every single one but I think the whole house would become a paper warehouse if we did that. It's funny, I remember memorizing how to spell my name and family members' names too, but besides her own name I don't think Nutmeg ever did that.

Here is the difference between boys and girls. When my son started to spell on his own he asked, "Mommy is how you spell burp BRP?" And later that day, "Is FRT how you spell fart?"

Boys, girls, it's still an exciting milestone.

Our girls are 5 and reading. You have to encourage it at home because most schools don't start reading until Kindergarten or first grade.
