Our truck in packed with 2 suitcases, 1 pack n play, 1 stroller and some beach towels. To the main cabin, we've added a dozen books, a bag full of My Little Ponies, Happy Meal and Strawberry Shortcake dolls, an iPod full of music, a gajillion snacks and a 2-screen DVD player on loan from friends.
We're hitting the road after lunch. We plan to be in the Quad Cities for dinner and ice cream and Iowa City by bedtime. A should be thrilled. The kid loves using public toilets so much that we may very well hear "I go pee-pee potty!" more than "Are we there yet?"
This is our first road trip with the kids, so pretty please, leave a comment with your best-- or, better yet, worst--road trip memories. I'll have my Blackberry with me in the car, and I promise to read aloud every last word. At least while Josh is driving.

I don't necessarily have a fav road trip memory, but your mention of public bathrooms reminded me of the time The Little Miss was asking me if everyone could smell her stinkies, which got a little chuckle from the stall next to us. And then she proceeded to inquire quite loudly why was I flushing with my foot. I was mortified but also trying not to laugh. I only wish I was the person in the other stall listening to the conversation rather than the one having it.
Enjoy your trip!
We recently acquired one of those DVD players with a screen for the back of each headrest. Road trips are really no problem now. Of course the kids don't look up fast enough to see any cows or windmills we point out, but they really don't care.
We are off to LA (5 hours) on Saturday!
Worst road trip memory: When I was 10 & my brother was 6, we went to visit my Dad's cousins because they had moved out of Chicago & bought a farm in Blandensville Ill (how much more cliche could a name be?). What we didn't know was that the toilets were manual flush, as in getting water from outside with buckets, there was no electricity, thus no AC or refrigeration, there were no screens on the windows, they needed help mulching (I vomited regularly from the smell), and it was over 100F outside. Add that to little food in the house and no regularly-scheduled meals, and it was a bogus, miserable adventure. Took about a month to heal from all the mosquito bites. I've never healed from my hatred of mulch smell. One of the few times my parents berated me for behaving badly =(
Best road trip memory (different trip, I think I was 12 and my brother was 8) is when my brother & I were given license, while on a slowish road outside of Peoria Ill, to roll down the window whenever we saw cows and yell "don't have a cow, man!" at them. Which of course led to tearful laughter & hysterics more than coherent yelling. Ahh the 80s...
We did a family road trip twice a year when we were growing up. My mom always had a bag of new crayons, coloring books, workbooks, puzzles, games, etc. What we usually spent the most time doing, though, was playing slug bug. You know the game where you call out every VW Beetle? And you get to hit a sibling if it's red (slug bug)? That went on until my parents were tired of hearing us scream -- blue bug, green bug -- slug bug.
